22 May Beatrice Novel Update
Revising (aka a boring kind of madness)
The relationship between madness and genius has been well romanticized over the years both in society at large as well as my much larger ego. Mozart, Van Gogh, Kurt Cobain, all had the crazies, a gateway to those abstract lands where the sparks of originality can ignite the flames of immortal greatness…or some such malarkey.
Well, recently I’ve been learning about another type of creative madness, the less attractive younger brother of that sexy artistic insanity. This form of crazy can best be summed up by that commonly memed catch phrase – “madness is repeating the same crap over and over and expecting different results.”
For the past 6 months, I’ve been revising my novel “Beatrice.” Which basically means –going to the same coffee shop every morning, sitting at the same counter and looking at the same words of the same chapters of the same story, over and over and over again. Once I spent a day rewriting a single paragraph only to end up with close to the exact same wording that I had started with. That’s not a joke. Wandering through this dark wood named “revisions” has not been the most blissful journey. But with all artist endeavors (especially writing) revising, refining and repeatedly going back over your work again and again, is just part of the deal.
Beatrice will now be coming out sometime in 2015. I’m hoping that the extra madness will worth it in the end.
